English Idioms: What Are They?
Los idioms son expresiones cuyo significado no siempre es obvio al analizar cada palabra por separado. Estas frases tienen un significado figurado y, en muchas ocasiones, no pueden traducirse literalmente a otro idioma. Aprender idioms te ayudará a sonar más natural en inglés y a entender mejor a los hablantes nativos.

TO THE BEST OF ONE’S ABILITY Cuando alguien hace algo to the best of their ability, lo hace lo mejor que puede. Ejemplo: She was nervous about giving the commencement speech, but she did it to the best of her ability. (Estaba nerviosa por dar el discurso de graduación, pero lo hizo lo mejor que pudo.)
ABOVE AND BEYOND THE CALL OF DUTY Si una persona hace algo above and beyond the call of duty, demuestra más coraje o esfuerzo del que se requiere. Ejemplo: The firefighter received a medal for his actions, which went above and beyond the call of duty. (El bombero recibió una medalla por sus acciones, que fueron más allá de su deber.)
MORE BY ACCIDENT THAN BY DESIGN Algo que ocurre more by accident than by design pasa sin intención deliberada. Ejemplo: I kicked the ball, and more by accident than by design, it found its way into the net. (Pateé el balón y, más por accidente que por intención, terminó en la portería.)
ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE Si alguien hace algo intencionalmente pero finge que fue un accidente, lo hace accidentally on purpose. Ejemplo: I accidentally-on-purpose deleted his contact information so I couldn’t contact him again. (Borré su información de contacto “accidentalmente a propósito” para no poder contactarlo de nuevo.)
OF YOUR OWN ACCORD Si alguien hace algo of their own accord, lo hace de manera espontánea, sin que nadie lo influencie o lo obligue. Ejemplo: The little boy went to see the manager of his own accord and admitted to stealing gum. (El niño fue a ver al gerente por su propia voluntad y admitió haber robado un chicle.)
ACE A TEST Ace a test significa sacar una calificación excelente en un examen. Ejemplo: Steven could go to the movies if he aced the test on Friday. (Steven podría ir al cine si sacaba una excelente nota en el examen del viernes.)
HOLD ALL THE ACES Una persona que holds all the aces tiene una posición de ventaja sobre los demás. Ejemplo: Given the high unemployment rates in some countries, employers hold all the aces. (Dado el alto desempleo en algunos países, los empleadores tienen toda la ventaja.)
AN ACQUIRED TASTE Algo que al principio no gusta, pero con el tiempo se aprende a disfrutar, es un acquired taste. Ejemplo: Many people say that beer is an acquired taste; it takes time and several tries to like it. (Mucha gente dice que la cerveza es un gusto adquirido; toma tiempo y varios intentos llegar a disfrutarla.)
GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER Si le dices a alguien que get your act together, le estás diciendo que necesita organizarse mejor para ser más exitoso. Ejemplo: I’ve got to get my act together and start getting my work done. (Tengo que organizarme y empezar a hacer mi trabajo.)
ADD FUEL TO THE FIRE Si alguien dice o hace algo que empeora una situación, está adding fuel to the fire. Ejemplo: He forgot her birthday, and his apologies only added fuel to the fire. (Olvidó su cumpleaños, y sus disculpas solo echaron más leña al fuego.)
AFRAID OF ONE’S OWN SHADOW Una persona que is afraid of their own shadow es muy nerviosa o se asusta fácilmente. Ejemplo: I’ve never seen anyone so easily frightened. She’s afraid of her own shadow! (Nunca he visto a alguien asustarse tan fácil. ¡Tiene miedo hasta de su propia sombra!)
