El artículo determinado (the) / Using the article “the”

El artículo determinado en inglés es “the”, y se usa para referirse a algo específico. A diferencia del español, donde tenemos “el”, “la”, “los” y “las”, en inglés solo existe “the” para todos los casos.

📌 Cuándo usar “the”

1. Cuando hablamos de algo específico
   • I saw the movie you recommended. (Vi la película que recomendaste.)
   • The book on the table is mine. (El libro sobre la mesa es mío.)
2. Cuando hay solo un objeto de su tipo
   • The sun is shining. (El sol está brillando.)
   • The president will speak tonight. (El presidente hablará esta noche.)
3. Con nombres de océanos, montañas, ríos y algunos países
   • The Amazon is the longest river in South America. (El Amazonas es el río más largo de Sudamérica.)
   • I visited the United States last year. (Visité Estados Unidos el año pasado.)
4. Con sustantivos que representan a un grupo completo
   • The rich should help the poor. (Los ricos deberían ayudar a los pobres.)
   • The elderly need special care. (Los ancianos necesitan cuidados especiales.)

🚫 Cuándo NO usar “the”

1. Con nombres propios (a menos que se trate de los casos especiales mencionados antes).
   • Maria is a great singer. (María es una gran cantante.)
   • I love Paris. (Me encanta París.)
2. Con nombres de idiomas y materias escolares
   • I am learning English. (Estoy aprendiendo inglés.)
   • Math is my favorite subject. (Las matemáticas son mi materia favorita.)
3. Con comidas y deportes
   • I like pizza. (Me gusta la pizza.)
   • They play soccer every weekend. (Ellos juegan al fútbol cada fin de semana.)
