Hay / There is – There are

La expresión impersonal «hay» equivale a las formas «there is» y «there are».

«There is» se utiliza con nombres incontables o nombres contables en singular y se puede contraer en «there’s»:

There’s some orange juice in the glass.
Hay jugo de naranja en el vaso.

There is a church on Colonial Street.
Hay una iglesia en la calle Colonial.

«There are» se usa con nombres contables en plural y no se puede contraer:

There are two fire stations near my house.
Hay dos estaciones de bomberos cerca de mi casa.

En negaciones se usan «there isn’t (there is not)» y «there aren’t (there are not)»:

There isn’t a restaurant there.
No hay un restaurante allí.

There aren’t three hotels in the city.
No hay tres hoteles en laciudad.

Para realizar preguntas se invierte el orden: Is there…?, Are there …?

Is there a museum near here?
¿Hay un museo cerca de aquí?

Are there any bookstores?
¿Hay librerías?

Las preguntas anteriores se pueden responder afirmativa y negativamente de forma corta:

Is there a restaurant near here? Yes, there is.
¿Hay un restaurante cerca de aquí? Sí, lo hay.

Are there any bookstores? No, there aren’t.
¿Hay librerías? No, no hay.
